British Conservative Leader in Europe wants to see a Stronger Services Directive

Wednesday, 15 February 2006

Conservative leader in Brussels Timothy Kirkhope today reiterated his support for far-reaching market liberalisation measures in Europe.

Mr Kirkhope's comments came on the eve of a vote in the European Parliament which is expected to approve a revised version of the Commission's directive.

Mr Kirkhope said:

"British Conservatives will vote for the most liberalizing approach possible in Thursday's vote"

"Conservatives have long been vociferous champions of liberalisation and an end to the protectionism that continues to undermine Europe's economic performance.

"Our cause has been greatly boosted by our colleagues from the new member states of central and eastern Europe, who know the benefits of free markets and greater business opportunities.

"If Parliament votes for compromise tomorrow we will be disappointed although we will support the final vote on the package. However,we will do so only on the basis that we expect Tony Blair and the Council to take steps to reinforce the directive without delay.  I hope Mr Blair will also convey our message to his fellow heads of government.

"This vote takes place almost 20 years to the day since Margaret Thatcher signed the Single European Act and we expect the present leaders in Europe to take forward this unfinished business with vigour."
